Online Distance Education Workshop
What is Distance Education?
Distance education (online learning, e-learning, virtual education, or whatever name you prefer) is the method of teaching when the student and instructor are separated by time, space, or both.
Distance Education Support at DU
To effectively deliver a distance course requires more than simply posting a syllabus, reading assignments, videos of lectures, and/or exams on a web site. Careful attention to course design is required to improve student engagement, learning, and retention in online courses. The CTL provides training and support to faculty and departments who are currently involved in, or considering implementing distance education courses at the University of Denver.
Distance Learning Workshop
CTL staff facilitate online Distance Learning Workshops for instructors new to teaching online. The workshops are delivered entirely online and instructors experience distance learning first-hand from the student perspective. Workshop participants will:
- learn best practices for designing and delivering an online course.
- design a course syllabus and student learning activities that are consistent with the learning objectives.
- learn how to organize and post online course materials in Blackboard.
- be able to identify challenges of distance education.
- learn communication strategies for teaching at a distance.
Instructors who complete the online workshop receive a certificate of completion from the Center for Teaching & Learning. The workshop facilitators and one DU instructor who completed the Distance Learning Workshop shared their experiences at the 2006 Telecoop Distance Learning Conference.
