About Adding An Assignment
Instructors can create Assignments and add them to a Content area. Assignments list the name, point value, and a description for class work. Instructors also have the option of including attachments to an Assignment. Students complete the assignment in a separate file and send it back to the Instructor through the Course menu.

How does the Add Assignment tool work with the Digital Drop Box?
The Assignment tool replaces the Digital DropBox. This tool allows you to place the assignments within your content and it gives your students access to a drop box, for this specific assignment. When a student uploads an assignment, it automatically creates a category in your Gradebook ready for you to grade.

I have posted assignments using the Assignment Manager and instead of an exclamation point in the Gradebook, one students shows a padlock. I am unable to access the file or clear the attempt.
This problem occurs when the student does not include a message in the comment box when submitting an assignment from the Assignment Manager. The student receives an error message but ignores it. The Error Message says:

“You must provide a value for comments.”

The student ignores the message and clicks Save – because they cannot click submit.

Solution:

Student needs to go back to that Assignment and add a comment and then the student can submit the assignment successfully.

This changes the item in the Gradebook from a padlock to an exclamation point and the instructor can pick it up.

The assignment file also can be picked up by the instructor within the Gradebook without the student going back. The attached file can be retrieved from within the Gradebook by selecting the – “Item File Clean-up” option for that particular assignment.
