Collaboration

I have a student who can't access the Virtual Classroom in Blackboard.
The Collaboration tools (Virtual Classroom and Lightweight Chat ) at times present the following common problems to users:

* Chat uses java. The client's browser has to be java-enabled. For Netscape, "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" have to be checked Edit / Preferences/ Advanced menu. For Internet Explorer, "Java JIT compiler enabled" has to be checked on the Tools / Internet Options / Advanced menu.
* Chat uses Internet connections to ports 7001, 7755 and 8081. If the client is connecting from behind a firewall, the firewall may have to be configured to allow these connections. This is unlikely to be a problem if the person is connecting through a commercial Internet service provider, but it is may be a problem if the person is using a computer at work.

The version of the Java Plug-in that worked with Blackboard during Fall 2003 quarter does not work with the current version of Blackboard. If you don’t have v1.4.1_02 installed on your computer, you will need to download that version to access the collaboration tools in Blackboard.

The Blackboard Collaboration Tools do not work if pop-up blockers are enabled within your browser.

About Managing Collaboration Sessions
The Collaboration tools refers to two types of chat room tools. Chat rooms are real-time lessons and discussions with your students. There are two versions of the collaboration tool: the Virtual Classroom and the Lightweight Chat. The Virtual Classroom lets instructors and students browse the web, participate in question and answer sessions, and participate in chats. The Lightweight Chat only features the Chat tool. Both collaboration tools give you the ability to record archives that can be made available to students.

How do my students view archives of a collaboration session? They click on the archive link and cannot figure out how to view the archives?
You need to make the archive available to your students from within the Bb control panel. Access the Collaboration area from the Control Panel, click on the archives button next to the archive you want to make available. Next, click on the manage button and select yes to make the archive available to your students.

Help - I can't locate the archives for our collaboration session.
Bb 6 doesn't automatically create an archive of the Virtual Classroom (VC) or Lightweight Chat sessions. The instructor must click the record archive button in the upper right corner of the VC or the Lightweight Chat to create an archive of a collaboration session.
