Development of Online or Hybrid Courses

Request for Proposals: Development of Online or Hybrid Courses

Proposal Due Date – November 9, 2012

Introduction. Funds are available for the development of online courses or hybrid/blended courses in which at least 50% of class time is replaced by online activities. Faculty members who have not received prior funding through DU’s Creating Online Course Initiative are eligible for this funding.

Program Description Faculty members selected for this funding will participate in the Teaching Online/Hybrid Workshop which will be offered three times over the next year. The workshop consists of three components as listed in the table below. Also included in the table below are the estimated faculty time commitment for each component and when the workshop will be offered. Participants should plan to spend 5-10 hours/week completing the online activities and participating in the online discussions. Upon completion of the online portion of the workshop, participants will join their colleagues for face-to-face presentations of the online courses and complete peer reviews of two of their colleagues’ online courses. Faculty members will develop an organized and student-friendly template for an online course as part of the workshop activities.

The online workshop is NOT self-paced. It is delivered using the Blackboard (Bb) learning management system and faculty members experience online education delivery firsthand as students.

Full time faculty members will receive first priority for this funding. Each faculty member selected for funding will receive a $3000 stipend in recognition of the time and effort required to create an effective online or hybrid course.  Half of the stipend will be paid upon the completion of the Teaching Online/Hybrid Workshop and the other half after teaching the course. Participants and the students in their classes will complete surveys about their experiences.

The proposed courses must have gone through the course approval process as required by the academic unit. They must also be pre-approved for online or hybrid delivery by the department chair and by the unit dean or director.  Please be aware that student enrollment in online courses is limited to 20 students and that the minimum duration for an online course is 4 weeks.

Proposal Requirements. Your proposal must include the Creating an Online Course cover page plus no more than two additional pages explaining why you are interested in teaching this particular course online. Courses must be taught before Winter 2014. The proposals will be evaluated by the OTL Faculty Advisory Board, and the best proposals will be selected for funding.
