Bridget Arend - Research and Assessment Analyst

Bridget has been part of the DU community for many years as adjunct faculty, administrative staff, researcher, graduate student, and now Research and Assessment Analyst for the CTL. Her background in teaching, instructional design, and faculty development for K-12, higher education, and corporate environments has fostered an ongoing professional curiosity about how people learn and how best to support learning through instruction. For nearly 10 years, Bridget has been involved with online education, including concentrating her doctoral work on assessment and learning in online classes. Bridget believes that a focus on educational outcomes improves any learning experience and is excited to bring her research and assessment expertise to CTL for the purposes of continually improving student learning at DU.

Julanna V. Gilbert - Director
BS in Chemistry
PhD in Physical Chemistry
Julanna is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry with more than 20 years experience in college teaching and scientific research. Her interest in exploring new ideas and in launching projects and seeing them through to completion has provided the positive momentum that characterizes the CTL. Julanna incorporates new techniques into her own teaching, including cooperative learning and the use of interactive computer applications. She is excited about bringing faculty members together to discuss their teaching and to share with each other what they have found that works or doesn't work. She is knowledgeable about methods that can be used to improve student engagement and learning, and brings this knowledge to DU faculty through the various seminars and workshops that are sponsored by the CTL.

Kathy Keairns - Senior Instructional Design Coordinator
BA in Sociology w/Business Minor
MA in Digital Media Studies
Kathy develops, coordinates and teaches hands-on course management workshops for DU instructors and staff. Kathy works one-on-one with instructors to help them effectively integrate Blackboard and other instructional technologies in their courses at DU. She also coordinates distance learning workshops for instructors new to online learning.
Kathy is the co-chair of the e-Learning Consortium of Colorado (eLCC), a coalition of public and private Colorado colleges dedicated to the enhancement of educational opportunities through distance learning. Kathy also chairs the DU Courseware Faculty Advisory Board.

Joseph Labrecque - Senior Multimedia Application Developer
BA in Communications Media w/ Studio Art minor

Originally from the New England area, Joseph now holds the position of Educational Multimedia Designer for the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Denver. His primary responsibility is to design and develop digital media solutions which enrich both the learning experience of students and also the teaching practice of instructors.
It is Joseph's philosophy that good design is a balanced combination of creative ability and meaningful, proper application. As such, he has acquired a high level of interest in coding standards and design aesthetics. Joseph has found that adherence to recommended rules and best practices are liberating behaviors as they allow an author to focus on the true substance of a project.

Jenn Light - Instructional Technology Support Specialist

Jenn's experience in training and supporting instructional technology in higher education, and her graduate education focused on adult teaching and learning principles, help her bring a thoughtful approach to assisting faculty in integrating technology into the curriculum.
For over 8 years Jenn has worked with faculty on a broad range of instructional technology projects for both online and on-campus courses. Although technology tools change continuously, her goal to use technology to invigorate and strengthen courses is steadfast.

Carrie Lorenz - Senior Educational Java Developer
BA in Mathematics with an Emphasis in Computer Science
As a member of the Center for Teaching and Learning at DU, Carrie works as a software engineer for application development. Her focus is primarily Java, J2EE, SQL, Unix, UML and XML. She is also the lead engineer on the DU Portfolio Community Application.
She is closely involved in all aspects of the project life-cycle including functional specifications, design, development, test and deployment.
Prior to joining DU, Carrie worked as a consultant for such firms as Accenture, Statera and BusinessEdge Solutions. She also worked as a developer for the Denver dot-com company, Epidemic Marketing.
Carrie is a graduate from the Colorado College, where she earned a BA in Mathematics with an Emphasis in Computer Science.

Alex Martinez - Senior Educational Web Developer
MA in Organizational Learning & Instructional Technologies
A New Mexico native, Alex joined the CTL team in 2002. He holds a Master’s Degree in Organizational Learning & Instructional Technologies and has ten years experience in training adult learners. Data management and web application development are two strong technical strengths that Alex brings to the University of Denver. He is a certified Macromedia ColdFusion MX developer and has been developing web applications for the past six years. As an instructional designer and web programmer, Alex fuses these two domains to provide instructors and students the powerful tools they need to manage the vast amounts of educational material in our current high tech society.

Jeanie Tischler - Adminstrative Assistant
Jeanie has been with the University of Denver for more than thirteen years, in the alumni office then the geography department, before joining the CTL in 2001. Her experience at DU gives her an understanding of the procedural differences within academic divisions, which enables her to excel at assisting faculty project managers in applying the correct procedure to their CTL grants.
Jeanie is responsible for sharing the mission of the CTL to the CTL staff, other academic units, faculty members, students, and the public. She is also a skilled SCT Banner system user attending periodic trainings to stay abreast of the system changes and upgrades. She was a member of the Accounts Payable Improvement Team and the Human Resources Information Improvement Committee and enjoys being a part of policy and procedure improvements.
Jeanie enjoys working with faculty members, whether promoting an upcoming seminar, offering advice on a CTL grant, or demonstrating how to use CTL equipment.
